Duffy Belts Three Homers To Carry RedHawks

Posted: Updated:

Matt Duffy hit his way into Oklahoma City RedHawks history Monday, belting three home runs in a 6-2 win against the Salt Lake Bees in front of 3,267 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Duffy became the sixth player in RedHawks history to hit three homers in a game, and the first since Mike Hessman accomplished the feat June 3, 2012 against Iowa.

Duffy hit solo home runs in the second, fourth and eighth innings for the third multi-home run game of his career. He also homered Sunday in Omaha and now has four homers in the past two games.

The RedHawks infielder became the second player in the PCL to hit three homers in a game this season, following Tacoma's Jabari Blash, who did it June 3 against El Paso.

Mainly powered by Duffy, the RedHawks (35-30) tallied four home runs in a game for the first time this season.

Oklahoma City and Salt Lake combined for five homers Monday, as each of the first five runs scored on home runs.

Grant Green opened up the scoring in the first inning for Salt Lake (24-41), homering on a fly ball into the left field bleachers for an early 2-0 Bees lead. The home run was the first allowed in Bricktown by the RedHawks since May 7, ending a stretch of 14 consecutive home games without allowing a homer.

Duffy connected on his first homer of the night on a line drive to center field to cut the Salt Lake lead to 2-1 in the second inning.

Leading off the third inning, Domingo Santana belted the first pitch he saw past the 415-foot marker in left-center field to tie the game, 2-2. The home run was his 10th of the season.

Duffy's second homer gave the RedHawks a 3-2 lead in the fourth. On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Duffy swatted one into the Salt Lake bullpen in right-center field.

The RedHawks added two runs in the fifth inning. With a runner at third base and one out, Gregorio Petit sent a sharp grounder to Salt Lake shortstop Vance Albitz, whose errant throw to first base allowed Santana to score and Petit to reach second base. L.J. Hoes, who finished the night with three hits, followed with a RBI single to score Petit for a 5-2 RedHawks edge.

Duffy's final home run was on a towering fly ball to center field in the eighth inning, scoring the game's final run.

After allowing the early two-run homer to Green, RedHawks starting pitcher Nick Tropeano (4-4) answered by throwing six scoreless frames and facing the minimum over the remainder of his outing. He allowed two runs and four hits, walked one and struck out seven over seven innings in the win.

Anthony Lerew (0-3) was charged with the loss for Salt Lake. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out two.

The RedHawks continue their four-game series with Salt Lake at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
