Bricktown Shooting Victim Satisfied With Gunman's Plea Deal

A teenager accused of shooting several people in Bricktown two years ago will go to prison. Avery Meyers accepted a plea deal with the state, just two days before he was set to go to trial.

Norman Richards was one of several people who came to see the Thunder-Lakers game on the big screen back in May of 2012. Richards was walking back to his car in Bricktown when Meyers fired his gun into the crowd and hit Norman and several others.

Richard was critically injured in the shooting. He was hit in the back and lost part of his liver, pancreas, and kidney. Richards says, at one point, he even flat-lined on the table at the hospital.

"Yes they say I flat-lined twice, and they had to revive me two times," said Richards. "I was in the hospital for 33 days."

News 9 has followed Norman's road to recovery every step of the way along with Meyer's court case as it travels through the legal court system. Richards says he's just glad he won't have to go to court and that he forgives Meyers.

"I have forgiven him," said Richards. "I have no hate in my heart for him. I wish all the well in there, and hopefully he can get his life together."

Avery Meyers accepted a sentence of 25 years in prison and will have to serve 10 year probation on top of that. Richards says he's satisfied with the plea deal and says he has already moved on with his life.

"Hopefully whenever he comes out he can contribute something to society, instead of being a menace to it," said Richards. "And hopefully he can just find god while he's in there and just get his life together."

Meyers will have to serve 21 years of his sentence before he's eligible for parole. He must also pay $29,000 dollars in restitution along with other fines.

Meyers is currently being held in the Oklahoma County jail waiting to be transferred to the state prison.
