Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms found another explosive device at a home where a man lost his hand in an explosion Saturday.

The device was discovered while agents were searching an Owasso home in the 11500 block of North 131st East Avenue.

Police tell News On 6 the man who was injured while filling a mortar device with gunpowder is Brian Wayne Self. Self, 31, lost his left hand and the fingers of his right hand when the mortar shell exploded.

The Tulsa Bomb Squad arrived on scene Wednesday afternoon and detonated the device which was found in a cardboard box inside the garage.

A bomb squad officer said it appeared to be a novice attempt at explosives.

Police were first called to the home Saturday afternoon after the explosion injured Self and the woman who owns the home.

Authorities tell News On 6 Self had several large fireworks, large amounts of gunpowder and mortar shells. Police believe he was making pipe bombs.

A search of court records shows Self has been arrested twice in the last year on misdemeanor charges. In February, 2014, he was charged with larceny from a retailer after police say he stole cologne from Kohls. He was also charged with assault on the same date after allegedly threatening a man with a knife.

He was arrested for driving with a suspended license, possession of paraphernalia and failure to signal in November, 2013. He has been charged in that incident also.

Both cases are pending with the courts.

Nearby residents in The Falls at Garrett Creek were asked to stay inside their homes, but authorities now believe the scene is secure.

A neighbor tells News On 6 how conditions at the home had deteriorated in recent weeks. Watch reporter Allison Harris' story in the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.
