It's boating season and that means a lot of you enjoy being out on local lakes, but there could be a hidden danger you're overlooking.

It takes a lot of work to get a boat ready for the season. Now is the time to be aware of a potentially dangerous situation at boat docks across the state.

Grand River Dam Authority Officials want to make sure all your electrical cables are intact so nobody gets shocked.

The winter months and changes in lake levels can cause electrical lines to short out. And Tim Lyons says he barely survived the electrified water.

"I was able to get back to the swim ladder, which was the absolutely worst place to be, because that's the source of the electricity was getting into the water was through that metal ladder," Lyons said.

The shock left him unconscious for 20 minutes. Standards require docks to have an electoral disconnect above the high water mark.
