Clearly the young man who went on a shooting rampage in California was mentally ill, but is there anything that could have been done about it?
I've said before we're doing a lousy job providing enough help for those suffering with mental illness.
In Oklahoma you can hardly find a bed for inpatient treatment for someone who is at a crisis point, and that's shameful.
As far as Elliot Rodger's rampage, there were signs, more importantly there were threats.
Multiple threats posted on YouTube more than a month ago, emails, comments to therapists.
This kid was in a death spiral, and although people, including his family, were worried about it nobody ever stepped in and said, hold on, we need to admit this guy and get to the bottom of all of his rantings.
If you post a threat online saying you intend to hurt someone, I say police immediately begin investigating and on the side of caution even if it means locking you up for a day or 2 until they can sort things out rather than just hoping for the best.
That would certainly cut back on the threats, but it might prevent a few more of these violent meltdowns too.
