Oklahoma Tornado Numbers Low For 2014

Posted: Updated:

On average in Oklahoma we see 22 tornadoes in the month of May. This of course means there are some Mays where we see many more, and some Mays where we see far less.

The average count for April is 12 tornadoes. This year there were 4 tornadoes in April, 2-Ef 0s, 1-Ef 1, and 1-Ef 2. So far this May we have only had one tornado in the state. A brief tornado touched down in northern Comanche county. It has not been given a rating yet.

In 2012 there were three tornadoes in May, compared to 63 in May of last year 2013.

Currently we are well below average for the tornado count, but that doesn't mean we will end the month that way. It only takes one big event to drastically change the numbers. The good news is, as of today, there are no high chances for severe storms and tornadoes over the next 9 days.

Our next decent chance for rain and maybe severe weather will be towards the end of next week.

Overnight Thursday night look for lows in the mid-40s with partly cloudy skies a light south wind. Friday highs will climb into the upper 70s and low 80s with a light south wind at 10 to 15 mph. There will be a slight chance for showers and isolated thunderstorms Friday evening in far northern Oklahoma.
