A judge has sentenced a former high school teacher who is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old male student.

Wendy Hickman had just started her third year teaching English at Bethel High School back in 2012. Pottawatomie County Sheriff's deputies arrested the 40 year old after a 16-year-old student and his mother filed a police report.

Hickman was originally charged with second degree rape, forcible sodomy and soliciting sexual conduct with a minor using a cell phone. Back in March, Hickman struck a plea deal, pleading guilty to the second and third count, and prosecutors dropped the rape charge.

A judge sentenced Hickman to a 20-year suspended sentence on the forcible sodomy count, and a 10-year suspended sentence on the soliciting count.

Hickman will have to pay fines and court costs, and will have to serve 200 hours of community service.

The judge also ordered her to attend sex offender treatment for two years and write an apology letter.
