My 2 Cents: USGS And OGS. Issue Earthquake Warning For Oklahoma

Posted: Updated:

It's ironic, I think, that the US Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey issued an earthquake warning of sorts for Oklahoma on Monday.

Ironic because just last week I did a story on the earthquake forecasting being conducted these days in Southern California. To call it an inexact science would be generous.

Out on the West Coast they're giving earthquake forecasts, that are more specific on potential power of the quake and vague on timing, and location that's kind of what Central Oklahoma got today.

The USGS and the OGS issued a joint statement today saying the risk of a damaging earthquake larger than magnitude 5.0 has significantly increased in Central Oklahoma.

It's the first time the USGS has issued an earthquake warning for a state east of the Rockies, and it comes after central Oklahoma was consistently rattled over the first three months of the year.

We had even more small earthquakes than California did during that period, more and more scientists say the earthquakes have been induced by deep injection wells used by the energy industry.

It's nice to get the heads up, but short of buying earthquake insurance there aren't a lot of precautions we can take.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
