RedHawks One-Hit Storm Chasers In Easy Win

Posted: Updated:

Mike Foltynewicz racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts over six dazzling innings, as he and Paul Clemens combined to one-hit the Omaha Storm Chasers in a 5-1 win for the Oklahoma City RedHawks Monday afternoon at Werner Park.

Foltynewicz (3-1) dominated the Storm Chasers over a season-high six innings. Six of his 12 strikeouts came consecutively to the final six batters he faced. His previous career high was 10 strikeouts, set on Aug. 21, 2012 while pitching for Low-A Lexington against Greensboro.

Foltynewicz allowed one run and one hit, coming on the same swing when Melky Mesa hit a solo home run in the third inning.

Clemens followed Foltynewicz, pitching three perfect innings to earn the save. The duo combined to retire the final 16 Omaha hitters as well as 20 of 21 following Mesa's homer, and 27 of 30 for the game overall.

The one-hitter was the first pitched by the RedHawks since Asher Wojciechowski's complete game shutout in Round Rock on July 8, 2013.

For the first time in seven games, the RedHawks (17-15) scored more than three runs. After struggling to get key hits with runners in scoring position over the last week, they got two of them with two outs in the third inning. Kiké Hernandez delivered a two-run double with the bases loaded, and Andy Simunic followed with a RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Storm Chasers (13-17) answered with one run in the bottom of the inning on the solo shot by Mesa.

The score stayed 3-1 until the seventh. Ronny Torreyes knocked an RBI double to deep left field, and later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.

Making his first start since May 16, 2005, Ramon Troncoso took the loss for the Storm Chasers. Troncoso (1-2) allowed three runs and five hits over three innings with four strikeouts and three walks.
