Cowboys Sweep Arizona State

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State completed a series sweep of 26th-ranked Arizona State with a 14-12 win in a Sunday afternoon slugfest at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Sunday's finale marked yet another come-from-behind triumph for the No. 9 Cowboys as their sixth-straight win saw them improve to 35-13 on the season. OSU has 21 comeback victories in 2014.

Coach Josh Holliday's ballclub racked up a season-high 18 hits in the contest. Saulyer Saxon tied a career high with four hits, while Tanner Krietemeier, Gage Green and Bryan Case added three hits apiece.

Mark Robinette was one of six Cowboy pitchers on the day and earned the win with three innings of work to improve to 2-2, while Brendan McCurry added yet another save to his school-record total, notching his 14th of the season and 22nd of his career.

On a day that saw OSU score in six of its eight at bats, the Cowboys fell behind in the first inning as ASU tagged starter Tyler Nurdin for three runs on two hits, with a two-out, two-RBI single by Jake Peevyhouse giving the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead.

The Cowboys weren't down long.

In the bottom of the inning, Saxon led off with the first of his four singles on the day, and two batters later, Krietemeier blasted his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the wall in right field. An RBI double by Conor Costello would tie the score at 3-3 later in the frame.

OSU increased its lead in each of the next two innings, plating three runs on three hits in the second and crossing the plate twice more in the third to go up, 8-4.

However, the fourth inning was ugly for the Cowboys as ASU erupted for seven runs on four hits. The Sun Devils sent 11 batters to the plate, with the big blow coming on a grand slam by Brian Serven off OSU southpaw Garrett Williams.

As it is wont to do, OSU battled back to regain the lead.

Down 11-8 entering the bottom of the fifth, Case jump started a rally with a leadoff double, and following a single by Saxon, Donnie Walton brought home Case with a fielder's choice RBI. Two batters later, the Cowboys would cut their deficit to one on an RBI single by Green.

In the sixth, a leadoff walk to Tim Arakawa, a Costello single and a sacrifice bunt put Cowboys in scoring position with one out. Case was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Saxon delivered the tying run with an RBI single. Up next it was again Walton's turn, and he put OSU back on top with an RBI single before a sacrifice fly by Krietmeier pushed the lead to 13-11.

ASU (24-20) got its final run and its lone score off Robinette on a solo homer by R.J. Ybarra in the seventh. Robinette's three innings were the longest by an OSU hurler on the day as he allowed one hit and struck out four.

OSU added an insurance run in the eighth on Case's first-career home run, and McCurry dominated the Sun Devils with four strikeouts over the final two frames to seal the win.

The Cowboys return to Big 12 Conference play this weekend when they travel to Manhattan, Kan., to take on Kansas State. At 13-5, OSU is tied with TCU atop the league standings.

Sooners Blown Out In Series Finale

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team dropped its final home game of the season to Baylor, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon in front on 1,175 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners are now 26-23 overall and 6-12 in the Big 12. The Bears improved to 22-27 and 7-13.

"Credit their kid Tolson," said OU head coach Pete Hughes. "That kid pitched to contact. He gave up his hits, but he grinded it out for them and set up their bullpen."

Baylor jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first leading to a three-run home run by left fielder Grayson Porter. Oklahoma came back with two runs in the bottom half and two more in the second. With runners on the corners and no outs in the second, senior second baseman Hector Lorenzana hit into a fielder's choice that drove in the game-tying run. Sophomore center fielder Craig Aikin then doubled to move Lorenzana to third, who would score the go-ahead run on a groundout to the right side from redshirt-junior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh.

The Bears immediately came back for two runs in the third to take the lead for good. Catcher Matt Menard tied the game with a double to left-center and Porter lifted a sacrifice-fly to put Baylor back in front.

In the fourth, the Bears loaded the bases with nobody out to chase sophomore right-hander starter Ralph Garza Jr. All three runs would come around to score and the Sooners trailed 8-4. Lorenzana led off the bottom half with a double off the wall in left and scored on a single by Aikin, but three straight force outs thwarted any chance of a threat to cut further into the deficit.

Garza (5-3) allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks in three-plus innings of work. Right-hander Drew Tolson (3-5) worked six-plus innings and scattered 10 hits and three walks, yielding five runs in the win.

Porter finished the game 2-for-4 with six RBI, while right fielder Adam Toth went 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

For Oklahoma, Aikin and freshman first baseman Austin O'Brien each went 3-for-5.

The Sooners are off in the midweek and return to action Friday, May 9 at TCU.

Pitching Leads ORU To Series Victory At UCA

CONWAY, Ark. – The pitching duo of Pepe Gomez and Jacob McDavid helped the Oral Roberts baseball team take a Southland Conference series at Central Arkansas with a 4-2 victory on Sunday.

ORU sits alone in eighth place in the conference with the victory over the Bears as the Golden Eagles moved their record to 25-22 overall and 12-12 in the league. UCA moves into ninth place at 11-13 in the conference and 23-21 overall.

Gomez (7-3) battled through seven innings, striking out five and allowing two runs on seven hits for his seventh victory of the season. McDavid took over in the eighth and held the Bears hitless, striking out two, to pick up his first Division I save.

Austen Colt had a nice day at the plate with a pair of RBI singles, while Tyler Boss reached twice, including a double, and scored two runs. Matt Brandy finished with a double, a single, drove in one run and scored one run.

Leading the Bears at the plate was Doug Votolato with a pair of hits, and Brandon Montalvo hit a solo home run in the third. Connor Gilmore took the loss in the start on the mound as he went six innings and allowed three runs.

The Golden Eagles continued their trend of scoring first as Austen Colt singled to center to drive in Audie Afenir to put ORU up 1-0 after two innings. ORU scored first in all three games of the series.

In the top of the third, with Domenico standing on first following a walk, Boss hit a gap shot to right center for a double, but Domenico was gunned down at home on the play. Two batters later, Sequeira singled up the middle to plate Boss to extend the ORU lead to 2-0.

The Bears answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs, including a leadoff home run by Doug Votolato. Later in the inning, Chris Townsend tripled down the right field line and scored as Nate Ferrell singled to left to tie the game at two.

Brandy regained the lead for the Golden Eagles in the fifth with a double into the left field corner to plate Boss from second to make it a 3-2 game. Three innings later, Colt struck again with Brandy standing on third, singling up the middle to bring home the run and make it 4-2 Golden Eagles.

ORU continues its five game road trip with two midweek games as the Golden Eagles head to Missouri State on Tuesday for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch, followed by a date at UALR at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
