After about a three-hour manhunt, police capture a man who allegedly opened fire on an Oklahoma City police officer, early Sunday morning.

It started at the Walgreens store located at SW 89th and Penn. Ave., where officers responded to a disturbance call. Police say it was around 2 a.m. Sunday when a drunken man entered the Walgreens and started yelling at the clerk. The man left when asked, but not before showing a knife to the clerk.

"The officer searching in the area found a male and female that matched the description of the subject at the Walgreens," said Captain Dexter Nelson, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

The officer spotted the pair just a few blocks away near SW 85th and Penn, but police say when the officer tried to confront the man, later identified as 25-year-old Gerad Gravitt, he turned around with a handgun and opened fire on the officer. The officer was not hit, but his car was.

Even though the officer managed to return fire, Gravitt got away on foot, triggering a three-hour manhunt on the ground and from the air.

"I heard about a quarter til 3:00, a helicopter and I got up, went to my dining room window, opening the blinds and I could see him up over my neighbor's house, with the spotlight on," said a woman who lives nearby, but didn't want to be identified.

The woman said she was frightened because her neighborhood is typically quiet.

"I called my neighbor and told her to be aware because I think they're searching for someone," she said.

Police finally caught up with Gravitt around 5 a.m. and booked him into the Oklahoma County Jail. Police did not say if he was hit during the exchange of gunfire. The woman with him was taken into custody for questioning.

The name of the officer involved was not released. Homicide detectives will investigate the case as an officer-involved shooting, followed by an internal affairs probe.
