If you want to know how Thunder crazy this city is, how enamored with these million dollar basketball stars people have become, look at the reaction to this newspaper headline.
Over a picture of Kevin Durant it says "Mr. Unreliable". It's a ridiculously overreaching comment to begin with. Durant is about to become the NBA's Most Valuable Player… MVP = reliable.
These types of headlines are common in a lot of professional cities. So I'm fascinated by the outrage the headline sparked, the heat turned toward the Oklahoman, and basically an apology from the newspaper for the headline.
I don't ever recall that happening here in Oklahoma's leading newspaper. People have adopted this team as part of their family. And the angriest reaction seems to be coming from the female fans who seem to view these players as their sons or brothers.
Here's a sample, Linda says of the paper: "You all should be ashamed of yourselves…"
Krista: "…another reason NOT to read that rag."
From Patsy: "If you can't say something good about KD, then keep your opinions to yourselves."
Ann writes: "Very very disrespectful and not the Oklahoma Standard…"
And Dawna thinks: "…that guy that wrote that needs to go!"
The most important lesson we can learn from all of this, you don't want to get these Thunder Mommas riled up at you.
