Baylor Beats Cowgirls In Big 12 Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas -

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team fell to top-seeded Baylor, 4-1, at the Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sunday.

"I give a lot of credit to Baylor," Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. "Baylor played really tough. They battled. They're a tough team with a lot of experience. They're well-coached and they executed in key moments. I thought our kids really battled. For such a young team, it was good for us to be in this position and get this experience. I think that we learned some things today that will help us as we look to the postseason."

The Cowgirls (15-8) fell down early when Baylor took the doubles point with wins on one and three. Baylor's Alex Clay and Blair Shankle struck first, defeating Cowgirls Maria Alvarez and Karyn Guttormsen on three. The match was clinched on one when Cowgirl freshmen Viktoriya Lushkova and Katarina Adamovic were outlasted, 8-5, by Victoria Kisialeva and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor.

Baylor stretched the deficit to two when Clay knocked off Alvarez, 6-3, 6-2, on six.

The Cowgirls responded with a dominant win on five by freshman Carla Tur Mari. Tur Mari downed Baylor's Alex Leatu, 6-1, 6-4, in the match to win her third match of the weekend and score the Cowgirls' only point of the day.

Baylor rattled off two-consecutive victories on two and four to close out the match. Baylor's 83rd-ranked Ema Burgic upended Cowgirl freshman Megan McCray, 7-6(4), 6-2, on two. Shankle clinched the match for the Bears with a tiebreak win in the second set on four over Adamovic.

The Cowgirls now await their seeding for this year's NCAA tournament, which will be announced this Tuesday, April 29, at 4:30 p.m.
