Severe Thunderstorm Delays OKC Memorial Marathon

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch throughout central Oklahoma up to noon on Sunday. That storm delayed the start of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon over an hour and a half.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon experienced a few delays Sunday morning due to the storm's lighting. The race was initially supposed to start at 6:30 a.m., but it was delayed to 7 a.m., 7:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. Runners took shelter from the storm in nearby parking garages and churches. The storm moved out of the downtown area just after 8 a.m., and runners were finally able to take their places at the starting line.

Meteorologist Matt Mahler said the storms moved to the northeast at 35 mph with half dollar size hail, lots of lightning and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

The National Weather Service also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for a few counties during the midmorning hours.

News 9 viewers sent pictures of hail between quarter and golf ball sizes.
