Cheryl Miller A Finalist For Langston Women's Hoops Job

News 9 Sports Director Dean Blevins reports that Hall of Fame basketball player Cheryl Miller is a finalist for the Langston University Women's Head Coaching job. Miller is on campus today touring Langston's facilities and is said to be seriously considering an offer. Langston Athletic Director Mike Garrett and Miller are longtime friends dating back to their days at the University of Southern California. Sources confirm that Miller, the sister of former NBA star and current TNT analyst Reggie Miller, has been in discussions with Garret about taking over the women's program for some time now.

Langston officially offered Miller the job Friday evening, pending the approval of the OSU/A&M Board of Regents.

Garrett is a former Heisman Trophy winner who shocked most observers three years ago when he moved from LA to Langston -- population 1,700 not including the school's enrollment of 4,000 students. The former NFL standout is a consummate salesman and has upgraded the football program but fell short this past season after proclaiming the Lions would win the national championship. Garrett resigned as AD at USC in 2010 and replaced by former Trojan QB Pat Haden.

Hiring Miller would be equally surprising, a splash and would bring national headlines to the NAIA program. Miller has no college head coaching experience. But the fact that she is considered one of the greatest women's players in history and name recognition should help open doors to higher profile recruits. Miller's affable style, charisma and background as a network TV announcer makes Garrett confident that hiring Miller could be a monumental step in bringing in the talent to take the program to a championship level.
