A crime victim and witnesses subdued an armed car thief until Tulsa police could take him into custody, according to an arrest and booking report.

Gilberto Fernandez Jr., 29, is in Tulsa County Jail in lieu of a $207,000 bond.

Police say a man discovered Fernandez tampering with the steering wheel of his car parked near 41st and Garnett. When the victim approached his car, Fernandez reportedly pulled a handgun and fired a round at him, hitting a nearby vehicle.

"Victim and witnesses overpowered and detained subject until police arrived," the arrest report states.

Fernandez has previously served time in prison, officers say. He was booked on several complaints including shooting with intent to kill, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and larceny of an auto, all after a former felony conviction.
