A woman is dead following a Tulsa hit-and-run collision. It happened in a construction zone on 61st Street between Memorial and Mingo.

Tulsa police say an adult man and woman were walking westbound on 61st at about 2:15 a.m. when they were struck from behind by a black or dark gray Chevy two-door truck that fled the scene. Witnesses say they believe the truck was a mid-2000s model.

"They were actually walking in the blocked off construction area," said Officer Tiffany Sappington, Tulsa Police Department.

"According to witnesses, that vehicle was actually driving on the wrong side of the construction barrier, so he would have been in the construction zone when he was driving."

Sappington said the man was up and able to talk to police after the wreck. The woman was conscious at the scene but later died of her injuries at a Tulsa hospital.

"I don't know that they actually saw the vehicle coming," Sappington said. "The truck was traveling westbound, and they were traveling westbound."

Police are not releasing any additional information about the victim until they can notify next of kin.

An officer working traffic control on this wreck was injured when a man in an SUV ran into the patrol car.
