Man Arrested In Sexual Assault Of Tulsa Memory Care Resident

A Claremore nurse faces felony charges after police say he raped an elderly woman at a Tulsa assisted living center. The State Department of Health said it launched its investigation in December and made their arrest on Tuesday.

Officers arrested 61-year-old Stephen Reed is in the Tulsa Jail facing a $100,000 bond and charges of rape by force or fear.

It was at Autumn Leaves Memory Care Assisted Living Center in Tulsa, where police say an 80-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by Reed, one of her caregiver.

After investigating the claim, members of the Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Taskforce picked Reed up at his home Tuesday morning.

He's charged with two felonies complaints of first degree rape - one count for assaulting a mentally incapacitated victim and one count of rape by force or fear.

We reached out to Autumn Leaves and it responded with a statement, saying in part,

"We have been made aware by the Tulsa Police Department that a former employee of ours was arrested. We have been cooperating fully with the Tulsa Police Department on this important matter. The privacy of our residents is paramount."

Sara Strecker with the Area Agency on Aging said there are signs you can look for with your family members in assisted facilities.

"If family members are familiar with loved ones, they will recognize any changes in everyday life in the facility, so pay attention to that," Strecker said.

Strecker says to Keep an eye out for bruises, be aware of any changes in their behavior, and, if they have a change in diet, start asking questions.

"Listen to them, believe them. In every facility there is a poster with our information. Call us, it's confidential," Strecker said.
