OSU Snaps Losing Streak At Baylor

Posted: Updated:
WACO, Texas -

Oklahoma State snapped its long losing streak in Waco Sunday as the 20th-ranked Cowboys claimed the series finale against Baylor with a 4-1 win.

Nearly seven hours after the game's first pitch, OSU secured its first Big 12 Conference win of the season as the Cowboys improved to 16-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. The game saw two rain delays totaling 4:22 – the first delay lasted 3:56 before a 56-minute delay the second time around.

The win snapped OSU's 10-game losing streak in Waco, a streak that dated back to the 2008 season.

Tyler Buffett, making his first appearance since Feb. 22, earned the win in relief for the Cowboys to improve to 2-0, while Garrett Williams picked up his first-career save with four perfect innings.

Five different Cowboys – Gage Green, Tim Arakawa, Conor Costello, Zach Fish and Ryan Sluder – collected two hits in the contest to lead an OSU attack that finished with 11 hits.

Baylor (13-10, 4-2) scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning off OSU starter Thomas Hatch as Matt Menard gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single.

After 1 ½ innings, the game went into its first rain delay. Upon resuming, Buffett took the mound for the Cowboys and was outstanding.

The freshman right-hander walked the first batter he faced but then retired 12 in a row, which included four strikeouts.

The Cowboys finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Green led off with a double, and a bunt single by Arakawa put runners on the corners. Up next, Donnie Walton laid down a sacrifice bunt to pick up an RBI and tie the score at 1-1.

OSU would take the lead after Arakawa stole third base, then plated the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the sixth, Williams came on in relief of Buffett and recorded a quick out before rain hit again.

Following the second rain delay, Williams came back and dominated the Bears. The southpaw did not allow a base runner over the final four innings while racking up a career-high seven strikeouts.

OSU added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, getting RBI singles from Sluder and Green to carry them to their ninth come-from-behind win of the season.

OSU opens a four-game homestand Tuesday night against Missouri State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
