OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma City police officers shoot and kill a man inside his northwest Oklahoma City home Sunday morning after officers say he threatened them with a gun.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. when EMSA paramedics arrived at the home, located in the 4300 block of NW 21st Terrace, after a woman reported her husband was suicidal. After they saw the man had a gun, paramedics called for police backup.

"These types of calls, they typically wait for the police to arrive," said Capt. Dexter Nelson with the OKCPD.

When four officers did arrive at the home, the elderly man refused to come out.

"With the front door being opened, the officers made their way into the house, continually announcing they were police and asking for the man to come out," Nelson said.

Police say the officers then made their way down a hallway to a bedroom when they saw the man reach for a gun.

"He reached for a firearm and pointed it at the officers and the officers returned fire, killing the man inside the home," Nelson said.

Neighbors say the man who lived there was Gail Fairless. Police would not confirm if Fairless was the victim of the shooting, but Bill Crye, who lives on the same block, said he wasn't shocked by the police presence.

"I've seen law enforcement in and out of that house before," Crye said. "It's a shame that sort of thing has to happen, but I'm not really that surprised."

Checking the court system, Fairless has a troubled past, convicted of DUI and possession of a controlled substance. In fact, several neighbors say through the years, they've kept their distance from the couple.

"I just know they were kind of difficult people," said Crye. "Those situations where you've got somebody difficult like that, you make sure you stay out of their way."

Police have not confirmed if the man shot back or how many officers were involved.
