Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will make an appearance in Tulsa Monday in support of the National "Talking is Teaching" early learning initiative.

The group focuses on closing the vocabulary gap between children from upper- and lower-income families. The effort is based on studies that show children from lower-income homes are further disadvantage by less exposure to hearing words from parents and caregivers, putting them even further behind as they start school.

Clinton will join with Tulsa leaders including George Kaiser University of Tulsa President Dr. Steadman Upham to launch the local "Talking is Teaching" effort.

The goal is to "empower parents and caregivers to boost the brain development and vocabularies of very young children by increasing the number of words they hear spoken to them every day," a news release states.

The event will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Tulsa Educare, one of the partners in the early childhood education effort. The meeting is not open to the public, but News On 6 reporter Emory Bryan plans to be there.
