OHP Troopers Cleared Of Wrongdoing After Deadly Shootout

The Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has cleared all three troopers involved in the shooting death of Zachary Sumner.

The Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has cleared all three troopers involved in the shooting death of Zachary Sumner.

News 9 first took you to the scene of the shootout near Interstate 40 and Sunnylane Rd. on Jan. 25. Now an investigation reveals troopers shot and killed Sumner after he opened fire, hitting Trooper Ryan Smith in the face.

Sumner then turned the gun on Troopers Chris Bunch and Brandon Seward. A bullet hit Bunch in the leg and the troopers fired back in self-defense.

District Attorney David Prater reviewed the case and cleared the troopers of any wrongdoing. He explains Trooper Chris Bunch witnessed Zachary Sumner blow through a stop sign at SE Grand and I-35 and a pursuit ensued.

Sumner fired three shots at troopers during the chase and then rammed vehicles on the interstate at speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Prater said in conclusion, "Sumner gave the troopers no choice but to employ deadly force to defend themselves and their fellow citizens."
