Strong overnight winds caused some damage in the metro. Several homeowners and business owners said they suffered structural damage.

"It was just terrifying," said Michelle Hoffman.

Hoffman and her daughter woke up in the middle of the night to a loud boom and the sound of strong wind. She said she thought it was a tornado and panicked for a moment. When they went outside Wednesday morning, they saw what had happened.

"It just lifted up the whole carport. It flipped and it ended up in my neighbor's yard up-side-down on his roof and my roof," she said.

The flipped carport damaged both her home and her neighbor's home. Hoffman said her house was also damage in the May 31 storm.

Up May Avenue about 12 miles, the wind pulled a metal awning right off an auto body shop.

"My employees got here about 7:30 this morning and I got a phone call saying, 'we've got a problem,'" said Dan Johnson, who owns May Avenue Service Center.

Johnson said he was not expecting any damage from the wind. His building was put up in 1983 and the wind never seems to cause a problem. But that all changed Wednesday morning.

"I've had roof problems and sign problems obviously but never something like this happen so I can't imagine, I knew it was bad," he said. "I didn't know it was that bad."

The metal awning came crashing down onto a car that was scheduled for repairs. The awning cracked the windshield and caused damage to the hood of the car.

John and Hoffman both said they were totally caught off guard by the damage the wind caused.
