OKLAHOMA CITY -

Funeral arrangements are pending for a 61-year-old Chickasha man, who's been a minister and elementary school counselor for many years.

Rod Carroll died late Saturday while trying to assist a stranded motorist on I-44 near Chickasha.

OHP said an Anadarko school bus lost control on the ice and hit Carroll. An OHP Spokesman told News 9 that the investigation is ongoing.

Elizabeth Richardson teaches kindergarten and had known Carroll since the 1980s.

"At first I couldn't believe it, and I looked at my husband and said I can't believe that, but after I heard the story I could see it," said Richardson. "That was Rod. He died doing what he does."

Carroll would have turned 62 next month. He left behind his wife Diana and two grown children.

"He had the heart of a servant," Richardson said.
