A 4-hour long police standoff in southwest Oklahoma City ended after officers arrested a man accused of assaulting his mother.

According to police, at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the report of shots fired inside a home in the 3500 block of Steele Avenue.

Before officers arrived, police said a woman was assaulted by her son and was seen yelling for help. She was taken to the hospital, and was treated and released.

Police said the suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Jose Manuel Gutierrez, was armed with a gun. He barricaded himself inside the house after officers arrived.

Authorities told News 9 that Gutierrez had fallen asleep during the standoff, and when he woke up, he decided it was time to surrender.

Gutierrez was taken into custody just before 7 a.m. Police said they obtained a search warrant and found a firearm at the home.

Gutierrez is facing several charges, including assault and battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm after former conviction of a felony, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and domestic assault and battery.

The neighborhood on Steele Avenue between S.W. Grand Boulevard and S.W. 34th Street was blocked during the standoff.
