Oklahoma State is off to its best start in six years after a 16-1 triumph over Alcorn State Wednesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

With the win, the 18th-ranked Cowboys improved to 5-0, their best showing to open a season since the 2008 club started 6-0.

Leading the offensive attack for coach Josh Holliday's squad Wednesday were Tanner Krietemeier and Bryan Case, who each collected three RBIs. Tim Arakawa, Donnie Walton and Corey Hassel added two RBIs apiece.

Freshman Garrett Williams earned a win in his first-collegiate start as the southpaw, who was limited by a predetermined pitch count, worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out five while allowing only two hits.

The Cowboys took command early on, rallying for six runs in the second inning, five of those coming with two outs.

Conor Costello, who opened the inning with a walk, plated the first run after stealing third and advancing on an error, before an RBI double by Arakawa made it 2-0. Up next it was Walton's turn as he delivered a two-RBI double to give the Cowboys a four-run cushion.

Krietemeier then stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to left field. The homer was the third of the season for the senior, who hit just four all of last season.

OSU added a run in the fourth and then put the game out of reach in the fifth as they sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied seven runs. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Case as he picked up the first RBIs of his Cowboy career when he tripled with the bases loaded. Arakawa, Krietemeier and Hassel also delivered RBIs in the frame.

The Cowboys used five pitchers in the contest, and they combined for 12 strikeouts while holding Alcorn State to just eight hits.

OSU took a shutout into the ninth inning before the Braves (0-5) managed an unearned run on a throwing error by pitcher Michael Freeman.

The Cowboys return to action Friday when they open a four-game series against Oakland at Reynolds Stadium. Friday's opener is set for a 4 p.m. start.
