Winter Weather Cancels Schools, Causes Traffic Issues In Northern OK

A winter storm has dumped as much as 10 inches of snow in northern Oklahoma, causing school cancellations and hazardous road conditions in the area Tuesday morning.

According to News 9 Meteorologist Jed Castles, Woods County, Oklahoma, received up to 10 inches of snow overnight. A winter storm warning remains in effect for several Oklahoma counties, including Woods, Noble, Alfalfa, Garfield, and Grant Counties, until 12 p.m. Tuesday.

A winter storm advisory is in effect until 12 p.m. for 30 Oklahoma counties. This includes Oklahoma County, Canadian County, Cleveland County and more.

Water Main Breaks In OKC

In Oklahoma City, roads are mostly dry at this time. Drivers should be cautious around Lincoln Blvd. and 14th St., as a water line broke in this area overnight. Sand trucks are treating the roads there as of 6:45 a.m.

Crews also responded to another water main break at Portland and N.W. 50th in Oklahoma City.

ODOT officials say the roadway has been treated with materials but slick spots could still develop.

No accidents have been reported in the Oklahoma City metro area as of 6:30 a.m.

Road Conditions

According to ODOT, slick and hazardous conditions are reported Tuesday morning in northwestern, north-central and northeast areas of Oklahoma. Crews are plowing and applying salt and sand to interstates and highways.

Drivers are urged to use extreme caution on their morning commutes, and to give at least 200 feet to road-clearing equipment.

In the Tulsa metro, roads are snow-packed and slick in areas. Caution should be used in workzones, especially those where lanes are already narrowed.

Drivers should remain very cautious of slick spots on elevated bridges and overpasses as freezing temperatures continue. They should monitor local weather conditions and plan plenty of extra travel time.

During snow and/or ice conditions, motorists need to:

• Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.

• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.

• Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

If drivers must travel out of state, they are urged to check area road conditions before heading out.
