Outpouring From Community Helps OKC Woman Paralyzed By Shooting

An outpouring of love to report - from people wanting to help a woman who was shot and left paralyzed in a robbery attempt on December 5.

We have received so many calls just here to News 9 alone from folks wanting to make a donation of time, money and even medical equipment and supplies.

Since our story aired on Monday, more than $7,000 has been collected in the Redbasket.org website that has been created to help Cheryl Ruaylarp and her husband.

And on Wednesday, they got a special delivery too! Piece by piece, volunteers with the local Woodmen of the World Association store brought in the one thing Cheryl said she desperately needed - a hospital bed that will allow her to raise up and down without getting sick. It was donated by a News 9 viewer.

"I'm so happy! Happy," said Cheryl Ruaylarp. "This has made my day."

"The response has just been awesome," said Tonya Overton with the Oklahoma Chapter of the Woodmen of the World. "We've had people from everywhere donating things from equipment to just encouraging words. I mean it's just unbelievable!"

In fact Cheryl now has a wheel chair, shower chair and bedside commode - all donated by a local medical supply company who wanted to remain anonymous.

"One of our coworkers saw the story on the news and we just went to work," said Sue Reynolds," Oklahomans help those in need!"

And then there were the bags and bags of diapers and other medical supplies donated to help Cheryl with her long road to recovery.

"I'm so proud of everyone who has contributed to me," said Ruaylarp, with tears of joy in her eyes, and a smile on her face.

And just as we were about to leave, nurses arrived to provide Cheryl with the best gift of all - tender loving care. And they brought a special air mattress that will prevent bedsores.

"It's just our calling," said Misti Davis, a nurse with Heavenly Hospice. "The minute she walked into our office and told us we sent straight to our supply closet grabbed stuff and here we came."

And it seems Cheryl has left quite the impact on her new found friends.

"We just care about people," said Reynolds. "And it was so wonderful meeting her today. And I'd like to come back and visit her."

"I'm trying to fight back tears," said Davis. "It's sad, I'm glad we could help."
