Woman Tries Cashing Forged US Treasury Checks In OKC Metro

A woman cashing forged U.S. treasury checks is on the run.

Edmond Police said she's tried to cash four of these checks at metro Walmart stores, and they are working with the U.S. Secret Service to track her down.

Two U.S. Treasury checks with two names on them from Georgia sparked red flags from metro Walmart clerks.

"They're just totally random, I mean, two different names, two different addresses, amounts and everything," Jenny Monroe, spokesperson for the Edmond Police Department, said.

"And while these checks will sometimes have two names on it, it will never say ‘one person for another' and if it has two names on it, both people have to be present and show ID to cash the check."

Edmond Police said a woman in her 30s, wearing a navy blue jacket and black hat, showed up to two Walmart's in Edmond and two in Oklahoma City on November 19, 2013.

"And she's using a different ID and name and check for all of them, so it's well this is a thought out operation," Monroe said.

"She knows what she's doing, just slipped up on just a few of the details of the check."

Using a Pennsylvania driver's license, the woman was successful in getting $901 at one Edmond Walmart near Danforth and Santa Fe with a forged check made out to Paula Banks for Debra Hill in Elberton Georgia. She even signed for it.

But she wasn't able to cash another check for $679 made out to Shanteka Hollis for Zerek L. Matthews of Monroe, Georgia. Store clerks at the Edmond Walmart Neighborhood Market near 2nd and Bryant caught on to her and tried to detain her, but she took off in a black 4-door car with a getaway driver parked out front.

A store clerk told police "the woman got on her cell phone and started saying, someone is trying to stop me, and I don't know what he wants."

Police believe the woman could still be in the area trying to cash checks.

"Especially with tax season coming up, there's going to be a lot of these U.S. Treasury checks out there people are going in to cash, and so we just want to raise the flag, there's certain things, there's security features built into these checks," Monroe said.

"As a business, here's what to look for, a lot of water-markings on the check, when you hold it, it has a heat sensor on it, so it actually changes colors where your fingertips touch it, based off your body heat."
