The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said two Peggs residents died in a head-on crash in Mayes County Wednesday evening.

Troopers said the crash occurred on Highway 82, about four miles south of Locust Grove at 6:23 p.m.

The OHP said Cooper Day, 47, of Tahlequah was southbound in a Ford F250 pickup when he attempted to pass another vehicle turning right into a private drive.

Troopers say Day's truck hit a northbound Ford Focus head-on.

The driver of the Ford Focus -- Benjamin Morgan, 20 -- and a passenger -- Evelyn Hays, 43 -- were pronounced dead at the scene.  The OHP said both were pinned in the wreckage for almost an hour and a half.

Another passenger in the Focus -- Robert Shepherd, 41, also of Peggs -- was taken to a Tulsa hospital where he was treated and released.

Troopers said everyone except Evelyn Hays was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
