OKLAHOMA CITY -

Firefighters have put out a large grass fire in southwest Oklahoma City.

The fire started burning at S.W. 74th Street and Council Road, just west of the Will Rogers World Airport Monday afternoon. The fire threatened a mobile home park where dozen of homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Westmoore Mobile Home Park in southwest Oklahoma City narrowly escaped serious damage after fire officials say a smoker tossed away a lit cigarette into the grass.

The problem with that is it's been so dry lately, coupled with strong winds, that dry grass turned into an accelerant for a grass fire that quickly stretched over ten acres.

Jim Gardner and Bob Mills Sky News 9 HD showed how those flames came all the way up to a wood fence on the North end of Westmoore Mobile Home Park. Some residents were evacuated. Others scrambled to gather their pets.

"It's very scary. It's very scary because you have to rush around try to get them and especially when you have so many, but we're okay. You can't forget your pets. Can't forget your pets. It's like your children," Jean Hale said.

"Well I've been out here since '97 and I've watched a lot of them come and go. This one here is the first one they ever evacuated anybody on," Wayne Dalton said.

Fire officials say when it's as dry and windy as it is right now, you probably shouldn't grill anything or do any outdoor welding right now either.
