An observant officer stops a robbery in progress, but slips on ice before catching the suspect.

It happened on Monday, January 6 around 8:20 p.m. when an officer with The Village Police Department noticed a suspicious man standing near the Circle K located at 9400 N. May Avenue in The Village.

According to a police report, when the officer circled around, the suspect was gone. He then saw the suspect inside the Circle K behind the counter. By the time the officer entered the store, the suspect was gone and the clerk said "he just tried to rob me."

The clerk told the officer that the suspect approached the counter with a gas can and asked for one dollar's worth of gas. As the clerk was applying the purchase onto a pump, the suspect went behind the counter and put a knife to the clerk's side and demanded cash and cigarettes.

The clerk filled a black plastic bag with cartons of cigarettes but the suspect left without the bag or his gas can.

The officer went back outside where he heard the suspect's car start up, but as he approached the car, the officer slipped on ice and was unable to get the tag number, the report states.

Surveillance pictures captured the suspect, who police describe as a black man in his 40s or 50s, 6'2" to 6'3" tall with a skinny build. The suspect was wearing a red hoodie and glasses.

If you recognize him or have any information about this crime, contact The Village police.
