This morning, the Oklahoma City Public Schools superintendent decided to cancel classes for today because of the bitter cold. It felt like it was 8 below zero at the time.
I agree with the decision. Most Oklahoma City kids don't have arctic weather gear. Well, so far 1,000 of you have sounded off on my Facebook page. Here's a small sampling:
Josh says: "Lots of metro kids walk and not all parents are lucky enough to have reliable transportation."
Doug writes: "We are nowhere close to prepared for this cold of weather! Not our cars and especially not our schools."
Bonnie disagrees: "I remember standing at the bus stop when I was a kid, with wet hair and having my hair freeze. Kids are pampered too much now days."
Katy says: "Ridiculous. Parents step up and drive your kids to school or arrange a ride."
From Tamara: "Do other school districts in the northern US close because its cold? I don't think so."
Yes, today they did.
Red writes: "Sucks for the parents who have to find a sitter in a pinch."
From Emily: "I'm glad I wasn't sending my boys out in this cold to stand at the bus stop and walk 8 blocks to get to it."
And finally, from Charles: "..it's not like the kids are going to be outside all day! How did we as a species survive the ice age? America is getting softer and softer by the day."
