An Oklahoma City police officer has been shot and a suspect is dead following a confrontation at a gas station on the northwest side of the city.

Reports of an "officer down" came out just after noon at the Food Mart at Hefner and Western. Capt. Dexter Nelson says officers went to the convenience store to speak with an individual, but the suspect took off running. The suspect then pulled out a gun and shot one of the officers.

Police have cleared the scene at the northeast corner of Hefner and western. But this all started with police trying to question that man at a convenience store across the street.

Police say two of their officers arrived at a 7-11 just after noon to make a voluntary contact with that man in the parking lot, when they say that man took off running across the street. Police got in their car and took off after him. Little did they know, that man was armed.

"He turned and fired on the officer with a firearm, and fired and shot the officer. The officer returned fire as he went down, killing the suspect," Captain Dexter Nelson said.

No word yet on why police wanted to question the gunman. Right now, police are not releasing his name or the name of the officer who was shot. But Police tell us that officer is expected to be alright.

Police would not tell us what part of the body that officer was shot, but they do tell us he is recovering at a local hospital, and at last word, was stable.
