The general pattern for January is looking quite unsettled and cold but not excessively cold. This sets up wet to wintry conditions for some of next month. This map is a look out to the 10th of January. This pattern sets up some big storm systems in a split flow. We will have storms develop with a southern jet stream (the close lines that look like guitar strings) while the polar jet (or northern jet stream) will remain mainly to our north.

Several of these big storms you see on the map will impact Oklahoma's weather next month. In between these systems, some milder conditions will return. Arctic air is not showing to be as big of player next month as this long range data.

This type of forecast is called Teleconnections, and it monitors the major waves across the Northern Hemisphere. Each 'big dip' or troph on the map is a wave. It is not necessarily accurate as much as it creates a pattern for long range forecast. Fun stuff!
