Key Piece Of Home's New Above-Ground Storm Shelter Heads To Moore

An 80,000-pound shell made of concrete and reinforced steel is on a large truck and heading to Moore, Oklahoma.

The structure is actually part of what will be a three-bedroom, two-bath house. The maker of the shell says when it's attached to the rest of the house, the concrete and steel portion will be able to withstand an EF5 tornado.

"We believe that every approach to keep people safe is the way to go," said Montenero US President John Greenwald. "Whether it's a small storm shelter, above ground or below ground. This is another option."

Greenwald says three-bedroom, two-bath homes that include these safe rooms or "safe suites" will cost a little more than normal wood-framed homes. But he says they add value, too; especially in Oklahoma.

Greenwald's company plans to use huge cranes to place the concrete shell that, right now, is on a truck heading northeast from Mississippi to a concrete slab at 1601 Post Oak Lane in Moore. It's expected to arrive sometime Saturday morning.
