Miami Teen Killed Crossing City Street

MIAMI, Oklahoma -

The Miami Police Department says a 13-year-old girl died Wednesday evening after she was struck crossing a city street.

Police said the incident occurred in the 2300 block of North Main Street at about 6 p.m.

Austina Banton was taken to a Miami hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Miami Public Schools issued the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident resulting in the loss of one of our students. Our heart goes out to her family, friends, and classmates.  It is a difficult time for everyone who knew her and loved her. Grief counselors were brought in this morning.  Procedures and referral information are in place to help meet needs that may arise for our students and staff.

Miami Police are still investigating the incident.
