One person was killed and another one was critically injured in a two-vehicle, head-on collision in Leflore County.

It happened at 5:52 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 59, about one and half miles north of Heavener, Oklahoma.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a 2003 Chevrolet driven by 28-year-old Jose Silva of Heavener, was southbound on US 59, when it crossed the center line and struck a 1997 Chevrolet driven by 29-year-old Alberto Diaz-Cortes head on.

Diaz-Cortes, of Heavener, was pronounced dead at the scene due to massive injuries. Silva was transported to Sparks Hospital in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, in critical condition, suffering from head injuries.

A passenger in Silva's vehicle, and two passengers in Diaz-Cortes' vehicle were all treated and released from the hospital.

Neither Silva nor his passenger was wearing a seat belt. Diaz-Cortes and his passengers were all wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, according to the OHP.

Troopers say they did smell an odor of alcohol on Silva's person.

The cause of the collision has been listed as "left of center - in meeting" in the OHP collision report.
