LITTLETON, Colorado -

An Arapahoe High School student is dead after shooting and injuring another student inside the school on Friday afternoon and then apparently killing himself, according to local CBS station KCNC.

One other student has been injured but it's not clear if that person is dead.

The shooting was reported Friday afternoon at the school in Littleton. Police escorted students out of the building in groups.

"We are slowly and methodically clearing the school and ensuring all of our students are safe," Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said. "They were safer inside their locked schoolroom classes than they would have been had we allowed them to exit, and that was part of our strategy and part of our protocol."

Some schools in the area are in lockdown mode.

In 1999, two students killed 12 classmates and one teacher at Columbine High School, which is near Littleton in Jefferson County. Columbine High is just eight miles away from Arapahoe High School.
