Schools across the state announced they were canceling classes for Monday.

The state's largest school district called off classes Sunday afternoon citing icy road conditions in neighborhoods that made driving school buses in those areas too dangerous.

Throughout the day, motorists in Oklahoma City were still struggling to get through snow-covered side streets. While the snow routes were mainly clear, many neighborhood roads were still untreated, creating slippery conditions. Those were the areas of concerns for the school district.

"It's just the idea of those huge buses slipping and sliding down the road, taking kids to school and picking them, which is something that we just don't want to take that risk," said Oklahoma City Public Schools Spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin.

Tinnin explained that zone leaders with OKCPS patrolled city streets Sunday morning and decided the ice and snow-covered roads were too dangerous for the buses. She added that if they decided to operate the schools buses on Monday there would be significant delays, putting students who have to wait outside for the bus at risk because of forecasted low temperatures Monday morning.

Another hazard schools districts cited in deciding to cancel classes Monday were the slick walkways. Bottom line, student safety is the most important thing to the school districts and that is why they chose to call school off.
