Tips On Preventing Car Accidents In Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:

If you are out in this weather and an accident does occur, there are a few things that could help you stay safe and keep another accident from occurring.

"We could run all the way to 6-6, 6-7, 6-8," said Jeff Jones of Arrow Wrecker.

Wrecker operator Jeff Jones is prepared.

"If the customers are broken down we are out there," Jones said.

Even though he and Arrow Wrecker Services are ready for the winter storm, there are still some concerns for drivers.

"People will stare and not pay attention and hit the cars in front of them," Jones said.

Watching it happen doesn't make things easier.

"And boom, they hit, it's just people being nosey," Jones said.

So to avoid that from occurring, Lieutenant Brian Orr with OHP has a solution.

"If their car is movable we want them to get out of the roadway as soon as possible," Orr said.

Lt. Orr requests you make one call before the towers depending on where you're at.

"Immediately call star 55 if on the highway or 911 on residential roads," Orr said.

Another major towing tip, if you are just stuck and have not been in an accident, request a winched.

"Say your wheels are spinning and you can't get out. You don't need to be towed, you need to get winched," Jones said.

Jones knows this could help towing companies and you.

"This is what you ask for, a winch truck," Jones said.

Lt. Orr also mentioned that an emergency kit is vital for situations like this. So if an accident does occur you can stay warm in your vehicle.
