Drivers are slipping, sliding, and crashing Monday morning on roads dotted with patches of ice across the Oklahoma City metro.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph told News 9 there were so many crashes Monday morning that they had to call in special services to respond to them all. As of 7 a.m., troopers were working about 20 crashes; most of them were located at the Amarillo, Dallas and Fort Smith junctions in the metro. Randolph urged drivers to slow down and take extra time to get to their destination.

"It would be better to be late to school or late to work [than crash]," Randolph said.

While News 9's Michael Konopasek covered one accident at I-35 and I-40, he observed two more within minutes of each other. No one was injured in any of those crashes.

At Interstate 44 and NW Expressway, a semi lost control on the slick road and spilled some fuel. The crash closed the westbound lanes I-44. It reopened just after 6 a.m. after crews cleared away the wreckage and sanded the icy overpass.

There were also several accidents earlier in the morning at the I-40/I-35 interchange. Around 2 a.m., five semi-trucks and eight vehicles were stuck on top of the overpass. One of those vehicles even slid into an Oklahoma City fire truck.

Firefighters say the trouble began when a driver was going too fast and lost control on an icy patch. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the vehicles were cleared away by 5 a.m.

According to EMSA spokesperson Colin Roy, paramedics responded Monday to 16 crashes with injuries. He said they've also been called to multiple homes where people have been injured after slipping and falling on icy patches on driveways and sidewalks. He urged people to be careful while going out to warm up the car or pick up the newspaper.
