A metro mom is accused of giving a gun to her underage son to protect himself.

The Village Police Department said Dena Plunkett's son is a gang member and when they questioned her about the weapon, she admitted to arming him.

Plunkett faces a charge of giving a minor a weapon and The Village Police said the weapon was a loaded 9 mm handgun.

Officers pulled over Plunkett's son in October. According to court documents, police found marijuana, a loaded 9 mm with a round in the chamber and Plunkett's son wearing a red bandana in his waistline for the Bloods gang.

When Plunkett went to pick her son up, officers said she admitted "matter-of-factly" that she gave her son the gun for protection.

Documents stated Plunkett said, "he is always allowed to carry it," especially when she lets him stay out late.

The report stated the 48-year-old mother admitted she knew it was illegal and that her son "needed protection from rival gangs."

Police also said Plunkett's son was out past curfew and he is not currently attending high school. Plunkett reportedly insisted officers give the gun back to her, but they did not return it because they said the gun most definitely would end up back in her son's hands.

News 9 reached out to Plunkett on the misdemeanor charges, but she did not respond. Plunkett has not yet been booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on the charge.
