A Texas man is in custody in Delaware County, accused of kidnapping and raping a woman last week.

Investigators say 55-year-old Terry Stanfill was wanted in Texas for failing to register as a sex offender. He's now in the Delaware County jail and could soon face charges of kidnapping and rape.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office said Terry Stanfill met the 30-year-old woman at Spanky's Sport Bar, on Highway 10, last Thursday night.

Sheriff Harlan Moore said the woman didn't want to have anything to do with him and thought he had left on his own. But when she went to the parking lot to go home, investigators say, Stanfill hit the woman in the face and dragged her into his car.

They say he took her to a mobile home, less than a mile from the bar, and raped her.

More said she waited until he fell asleep and then took off running to call 911 from a nearby home.

Before the woman was transported to a Grove hospital, investigators say she identified the suspect and the mobile home where she was held.

Detectives say Stanfill served 25 years in Texas for sexual assault and did not register as a sex offender when he got out.

The sheriff said the woman was very brave for escaping from what he says is a very dangerous man.

"I think it's exceptional that she was able to do that. I mean, the circumstances of the whole thing, if you think about it, it could have turned out a lot worse," Moore said.

Investigators believe Stanfill has only been in Oklahoma since July.
