Flames raced through a vacant home in northeast Oklahoma City early Tuesday morning, but something firefighters found inside has raised questions about how the fire started.

The fire began just after 2:30 a.m. at a house on N.E. 17th Street near Kelley. The smell of smoke awakened neighbors, who called 911.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and found flames consuming the roof and smoke billowing from the house. Crews put out the fire, but had to return just after 5 a.m. when the fire rekindled.

The fire destroyed the house. No one was living there, but firefighters found a cell phone lying on the kitchen counter. The discovery makes investigators wonder if the fire may have been set on purpose.

No one was hurt in the fire.
