A driver lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole after running from Tulsa Police early Monday.

Police say the chase began when an officer tried to stop the red Chrysler sedan for an expired tag near 31st and Memorial.

Police say the chase reached speeds of 90 mph and ended after they used a spike strip to puncture the driver's tire just after 1 a.m. The car crashed into a light pole at 31st and Woodward.

According to police, the driver, Dirk Stivers, 28, of Oklahoma City ran from the wrecked car and officers arrested him several blocks away. Police took him to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Stivers told officers he had been smoking crystal meth prior to the chase.

Police then booked Stivers into the Tulsa County jail on complaints of eluding and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as several outstanding felony warrants.

A female passenger told officers Stivers had picked her up and during the chase she had begged him to stop. She was questioned and released.
