After not being projected to return to the Oklahoma City lineup until at least Thanksgiving, Russell Westbrook will return to the court Sunday night for the Thunder's home opener against Phoenix.

Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti issued a statement Sunday afternoon, detailing Westbrook's availability for tonight's game against Phoenix.

"Russell Westbrook has gone through a methodical rehab process jointly created by our medical and performance teams and treating physicians," Presti said in the statement. "The process has been instrumental in getting Russell to this point and has included various physical and medical benchmarks. The final benchmark being unrestricted basketball activity. After hitting the necessary marks, all parties, including the team, consulting physicians, Russell's representatives, and most importantly Russell, jointly determined that returning to play was the correct next step."

Westbrook tore his meniscus in his right knee against Houston in the first round of the playoffs last season. After experiencing some swelling in the knee, Westbrook had surgery to correct a loose stitch and alleviate the swelling on Oct 1.

After the surgery, the team initially listed a return date, "four to six weeks" after the start of the regular season.

Tonight's game against Phoenix will tip off at 6 p.m.
