LAWTON, Oklahoma -

Members of the Norman High School band safely escaped after a charter bus taking them to a university in Lawton caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

There were three charter buses in the caravan to Cameron University. One of the buses experienced mechanical failure on Interstate 44 and Cache Creek near mile marker 47.

All 43 students safely evacuated the bus before it caught fire, but a picture from KSWO in Lawton shows the vehicle was eventually engulfed in flames and smoke.

Another bus is headed to the scene to pick up the students. The fire closed both directions of I-44 at the scene.
