A high school student was busted for sharing brownies in the cafeteria. Only problem was the brownies were laced with drugs.

Police were called into investigate after several students at Bethany High School complained they were sick in class.

Bethany High School Principal Dr. Don Wentroth explained a half dozen students consumed brownies laced with valium on Friday.

"The students began feeling the effect probably one to two hours after they ate the brownies," Wentroth explained the students notified school officials when they became drowsy.

School officials were able to trace it back to a freshman student who allegedly brought the brownies to school to celebrate her birthday.

Bethany Police were called in to investigate the complaints.

"She told officers it was just for herself and when she got them out to start eating them the others started taking the brownies out of the bag," Bethany Police Deputy Chief J.D. Reid said.

Reid explained the students affected by the brownies claimed they did not know the brownies were made with prescription drugs.

Investigators are not sure how much valium was used, but warned prescription drug abuse is a problem in schools across the state.

"We always say to keep your medicines locked up and away from kids so they get them and this case is a perfect example of why," Reid said.

Dr. Wentroth said this is the only drug related incident in the last three years.

The school notified only the parents of students affected by the brownies.

"If it doesn't affect you, then just trust to know we will take care of the situation and make sure this place is safe for everybody," Wentroth explained there is not an ongoing threat for students at Bethany High School.

Bethany Police are conducting an investigation and said the student could be facing felony distribution charges.

Until the investigation is complete, the student will be on suspension. All students affected by the brownies were back in class on Monday.
