A Luther family escaped an overnight fire with no time to spare around midnight Friday. The mobile home north of Luther is a total loss, but no one was killed thanks to some quick thinking.

The home was gone in minutes. Witnesses say there was nothing the firefighters could do.

"We didn't have time to get anything because the smoke was already filling the house," survivor Brittany Davis said. "My dad tried to get the water house and put it out, but we already saw flames going up."

Brittany, her dad, stepmom and brother are all doing OK thanks to Brittany springing into action after smelling smoke.

"I was screaming your room is on fire, your room is on fire," Brittany said.

Brittany says she then realized it wasn't her dad's room. The flames were coming from the laundry room and quickly spreading throughout the mobile home. Once everyone made it outside, Brittany realized her four-legged friend named Ben was missing, so she went back inside.

"That was the only thing I was worried about," said Brittany. "He wasn't moving so it freaked me out ... I grabbed him and I figured he couldn't breath either."

Ben, the Chihuahua, is now fine. Brittany, who had a kidney transplant two years ago, is working to replace needed prescription medication. The Red Cross and Luther Public Schools are helping, but money is still an issue.
